I became the Mayor! Kawaii-ku Press Conference

Hey! Long time no see, I have some big news for you!

I recently became the new mayor of Kawaii Ward in Fukuoka City!

What! What do you mean you already know!?

I see. It was all over the news, in news papers, and on net blogs already.

I’m pretty slow in updating my blog. Haha.

But I think there are lots of people who still don’t know about Kawaii-ku.

So, while I show some pictures from last week’s press conference,

I’d like to talk a little bit about Kawaii-ku.

Statistics show that Fukuoka City has the highest concentration of young people aged 15-29 in Japan.

And in that bracket, women are prominent.

And because of that, there are more hairdressers, beauty salons and esthetics in Fukuoka than anywhere else.

Furthermore, women in Fukuoka spend more money on “beauty” than anywhere else in Japan.

And so Kawaii-ku is the official eighth district in Fukuoka City.

It was created to acknowledge this thriving “cute” culture that exists in Fukuoka.

It was also created to not only support the “cute culture”,
but to support those who support the culture as well.

BUT…. it only exists online.

If you register online, you can get a “jyumin-hyo” (residence certificate) at Fukuoka City Hall.

But you can’t buy a house in “Kawaii-ku” or anything.

Registrants receive special information about events or coupons to use in the city.

IMG_0544 IMG_0522
But if you ask me, “kawaii” isn’t just defined by what’s on the outside.

Depending on what you like, and the things you enjoy, your personality is defined.

I think what is defined as “cute” varies from person to person.

For example, there are some people who might think this is cute:

But there might be people who find this to be even cuter:   (okay, maybe it’s just me?)

In any case, I think being able to have fun choosing what you like,
and developing your own style, is the essence of “kawaii”.

And it is with this thought, that I accepted the position of “Mayor” of “Kawaii-ku” in Fukuoka City.

I want to make Kawaii-ku a fun concept for everybody who wants to be involved, no matter age, or gender.

I don’t only want to spread information about Fukuoka, but information that will be helpful to people.

Actually, I don’t think it’ll be too different from what I already do.

It’s just now, rather than it being just a hobby,
it is now part of my responsibility to create proper content for you.

By the way, the press conference was a really neat experience.

Usually I just sit at home and talk to my own camera,

This time, I talked in front of MANY cameras at once.

I was really nervous, and I don’t even remember most of what I said.

But luckily Fukuoka City has uploaded the entire thing on YouTube,
so you can catch me being nervous if you really want to.

In case you’re wondering why I’d be nervous, this is what I was looking at:

You can register for Kawaii-ku from anywhere in the world, at kawaiiku.jp

Right now, there isn’t much there for foreign, or even non-residents of Fukuoka, but

We’ll be working to change that.

Also I’ll be attending events around the city, so I will have a chance to meet some of you.

If we meet, I’ll give you one of my Kawaii-ku business cards!

I’ve been working hard!

And I’m having fun working in Japan.

Thank you for always supporting me until now.

And please, if you can, keep supporting me from here on too.

I’m always thinking about how thankful I am for you.

Thank you always.

Actually, I’m English teacher now, but I am totally Japanese and struggle how I can deal with that job. However, since I know about you, you made me so cheered up.
Anyway, I will keep watch you and support you from today. It was great to fond you tonight on TV show (something you were in Island of Okinawa) Even I’ve been to Okinawa, but not that island and not hard time like your performance( you did so hard!!!) but I am supporting you from the bottom of my heart!!
moreover you show me the real of our age, I mean dirty room, so need to be patient, etc….
I’m gradually feeling I could meet such like you, I mean the same age person struggle with things and
trying to get find new environment to live. that’s so miracle.

I will stop talking even most people don’t understand what I’m saying here…
      Hopefully we are same age.

    2. Hey Ciaela!

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve recommended your blog for “The Very Inspiring Blogger Award” on my blog. It’s kind of like a pay it forward scenario where you recommend blogs that you find inspiring and then display an award for having your blog recommended as well. I enjoy your blog so thought it would be great to recommend yours!

      Cheers

      Robert

    1. It’s my dream to own some! (I’ve even picked out names! Cynthia and Stacy for two girls, or Hurley and Charles for guys.) ! But for now I’m satisfied with Kit ~I guessss~.

  2. Well, just like you said I already knew about it, but I didn’t know exactly what it was all about, so thanks for explaining!🙂
I still don’t get how you became mayor, though. Did you have to apply for it somewhere?

Aww, I want to get professional make-up ONCE!! (*_*)

And I would have run away with so many cameras pointing at me! T_T
Giving you credit for that! You are a brave girl!😀

    1. I didn’t apply for it. I was approached and asked if I was interested and I thought it was a joke at first. Why would a Canadian become a mayor of a Fukuoka district–even if it was a virtual venture?

But then I asked my manager what he thought and he said, “it’d be really funny if you took the job, I think you should try for it.”

So we decided to go ahead with it.

Then I met with the city and I became really interested in the idea and the project–I have my own ideas for how I want to proceed with it, so it will be interesting to see how these next couple of months turn out!🙂

      1. I think it was a smart move for sure!
I’ve never heard of it before – like most of the people abroad or outside of Fukuoka, so they also did well in choosing you out of all people! ^___^

        Congrats again!😀

  3. I think the kitten is cuter than that pony in the picture underneath it.

Good luck in your new job. I know you’ll be awesome at it!

I think the English translation of コンテンツ should be ‘content’. You can’t pluralise content because it’s uncountable /nitpick

  4. Congrats!

Just a thought, in Canada we have a lot of cities with a sister city in Japan. If you’re looking for a way to include non-residents of Fukuoka a sister city might be one way. You can highlight local events of your home city while still being part of the larger community.

  5. Sounds like you’re having a ball!
I just registered and am now a resident of Kawaii-ku too! I look forward to actually making it to Fukuoka at the end of the year too!
I’m just bummed that I won’t have the chance to get a resident card😦 Any chance you can get them sent internationally?
Anyway, hope you’re loving life and loving what you do! We’ll keep supporting you!

    1. If you visit Fukuoka and stop by City Hall, you should be able to pick up your special “Kawaii-ku” residence registration certificate! It only takes about 5 minutes to get it printed and costs 300en.🙂

I agree, they need to have a way to get them shipped internationally. I’ll see if I can get that to happen. 8)

  7. I will always support you micaela…always , love you ♥ Without even met you.
because I have this feeling deep in my heart tell me that youre great person , I hope you stay a good person all your life and I hope you find happiness in any place you put your foot on.
thank you for being in my life
thank you for being in my heart
and thank god for creating this beautiful beautiful soul.

  8. I’ve been watching you on you tube for 5 or 6 years now and it is amazing to see how much you have accomplished! You are such a great inspiration. I am so proud and impressed! You have my support!🙂

    1. I WAS SO NERVOUS I was saying “I’M DYING IM DYING” backstage right before I had to go on. HAHA.

The outfit was actually hand-made and designed by a local clothing brand here in Fukuoka called MariettA. They were really nervous about styling me, but in the end they created an interesting look I would have never otherwise chosen for myself.

  9. Congrats! It’s awesome to see you so excited about working now when you were down not too long ago. Gives me hope my own hard work will pay off sometime too! Good luck with Kawaii-Ku; I love how you defined “kawaii”. :3

    1. You’re right. There was a lull in my activities where I felt like the work I was doing wasn’t reflecting me, and I was frustrated a bit with my direction, but this will be a fun project to work on, and the experience is going to be useful in the future as well.🙂

  11. Hi Micaela,
FIrst off, many congratulations on your new job! I believe you have worked hard and really deserve to be where you are in life. That is why I adore you so much.
To be honest, I started following you and your videos because you’re cute, embarrassing to admit, yes, but the more I learn about your life, I see someone who deserves more commendation for her spirit and effort than mere compliments on her beautiful face.
So, I just want you to know that you are my role model. You give me motivation and hope, and I hope to gain a similar level of achievement in life. I am currently in that state of disorientation as to where I will be in life, but you show me that things will work out if you persist. If you ever feel down in life, just remember that you have tremendously helped a lot of people, me included, if I may speak on all of those people’s behalf.
Thank you for sharing your journey and please always keep your smile on, Miss Mayor!

  12. Hey Micaela. Congrats on the mayor position i watched some of it on tv when i was in tokyo😛 happy to see a foren person in a spot of dignity in japan hope to see meny vids of you for the neer and for future😛

  14. What an awesome opportunity for you. Just found you from one of your YouTube videos – am bookmarking your website and subscribing to your channel. Haven’t been to Japan yet but plan on doing so next year and the town where you live sounds amazing🙂

  16. Hi, Micaela!
‘Omedetougozaimasu’ on your appointment as mayor of Kawaii ward in Fukuoka! There have been claims that women in Fukuoka have the ‘purest’ of skin in all Japan (because of the presence of many skin care shops, etc). I have a very reliable source in Japan that said recently: ‘But what about Akita?’ My source said that it’s the women drinking Akita water that have the ‘purest’ of skin… 🙂
    Have fun!
